Best Emotional Support Animal Breeds: Choosing The Right ESA

What actually makes a good emotional support animal — temperament, size, and lifestyle fit matter more than breed alone.

There’s no such thing as an “official” ESA breed

Unlike psychiatric service dogs, emotional support animals are not required to have specialized training or belong to a specific breed. What matters is the bond between you and your animal, and whether that companionship is connected to a diagnosed emotional or mental health condition.

What actually matters when choosing a companion

  • Temperament over breed. Calm, people-oriented animals tend to adapt well to apartments, travel, and everyday routines.
  • Your living situation. A high-energy breed in a small apartment can add stress rather than relieve it — be honest about your space and time.
  • Your ability to care for them. An ESA is a real commitment. Choose a companion whose needs you can realistically meet.
