What Do I Need To Know About Emotional Support Animals?
In the United States, we recognize the value of service and emotional support animals for people with disabilities. Laws are in place to make sure these individuals and their animals are treated fairly in housing, workplaces, and public areas.
Housing
Landlords must accommodate service animals and emotional support animals, regardless of no-pet policies. No additional pet fees can be charged, but tenants may be responsible for damages. Reasonable-accommodation requests with reliable documentation must be submitted.
Employment
Employees can ask for special arrangements to accommodate service or emotional support animals. Employers must provide accommodations that do not cause undue hardship. Alternative accommodations may be suggested, and reliable documentation may be required.
